Mihui Hong: Solo Exhibition 'INTERSPACE'

Artist Note

Painting usually renders depth on a flat surface through brushwork texture and layered color and line, or visualizes distance through perspective. My own work instead takes a form distinct from flat painting — a kind of sculptural, low-relief painting. This low-relief technique translates the depth of the picture plane into an actual, physically raised relief form. Unlike flat painting, which has only a single face, each of the canvas's five sides carries a different image, requiring viewers to move actively around the work and take it in from multiple angles.

Invitation

Point, line, and plane are elements that constitute painting, but they are equally the elements that constitute spatial dimensions such as flatness and volume. In her work, Mihui Hong crosses the opposing concepts of flatness and volume, drawing out a balance between them. She further expands the concept of painting itself by connecting the canvas surface with the space beyond it. Through this exhibition, which lets boundaries once thought fixed move fluidly, we hope viewers can step outside rigid postures and find their own vision — and life — expanding as well.
