Y.K. Byun: Solo Exhibition

Y.K. Byun, based in Chicago, presents two bodies of work: monochrome square paintings built up over time through layer upon layer of color in subtle resonance with one another, and works whose edges seem to glow while their interiors are made up of countless dots that feel almost tactile. In some pieces, only the faintest difference in brightness lets the upper and lower halves meet, creating a delicate horizon-like division. He has found deep resonance especially in the artistic outlook and stance of Ad Reinhardt, and by fusing his own East Asian cultural background with American minimalism, he has come to pursue a body of work that reveals calm and stillness through simple planes of color. In this sense, Y.K. Byun's work is like a mirror — a medium of meditation reflecting the artist's own self.
