Haekang Lee: Solo Exhibition

■ Memories of love, feelings of love — I pour them into characters. These characters are me, and they are also you.

The characters painted in the street are found by chance. It resembles those moments in life when you suddenly fall in love. Or they blend so naturally into their surroundings that it seems as if they had always been there. This, too, resembles that form of love that is always by our side.

Love, in its many forms, is always around us. It exists naturally, while also carrying within it a mysterious power. For some it becomes the whole of life; sometimes it creates situations beyond common sense. It is hard to put into precise words, but we all know what that feeling is like. I want to unravel everything, starting from this mysterious feeling. Because I believe everything in life works the same way.

I paint not only on canvas, that familiar frame, but on all kinds of surfaces. Most of these, too, are objects I encountered in the street. This is my way of expressing, through the theme of love, an attempt to move beyond conceptual frames by transposing it onto physical surfaces.
