Gyutak Lee: Moon Jar Exhibition

Soohoh Gallery presents Gosan Gyutak Lee's moon jar exhibition, running Wednesday, November 5 through Monday, November 24, 2014.

During the presidency of Park Chung-hee, Gosan Gyutak Lee traveled to Japan as a state scholarship student, where he entered the Takatori kiln and studied ceramics under Takatori Seizan XI. He remains a master of buncheong (grey-green stoneware coated with white slip), a tradition he continues to this day, and his standing has reached master rank even in Japan. The moon jar is the ceramic form that, in the eyes of Westerners and Koreans alike, best embodies Korean sensibility — its round form radiating a natural warmth and familiarity. Because it is made by shaping two bowl forms separately and joining them at the belly, it is never perfectly symmetrical: it may lean slightly to one side, and the seam of the join often remains visible. Gosan Gyutak Lee is recognized as the artist who most perfectly recreates the moon jar's form — two bowl shapes coming together to become one large jar. In the work of completing a whole moon jar lies his wish to express, through the union of yin and yang, a single breath of life.
