■3D Ink Painting

All three works take the form of eighteenth-century ink paintings, or paintings that faithfully preserve the beauty of that era, and attempt through this work to graft them onto contemporary sensibility and technology for reinterpretation. Traditional ink painting, and most East Asian painting in the broader sense, has expressed depth through the brightness, intensity, and gradation of ink, yet it has been difficult to convey the kind of three-dimensional spatial sense found in Western painting, especially since the Renaissance. I believe, however, that the technology of our era continues to advance in many ways, offering new methods and answers. Grafting this technology onto traditional ink painting lets us feel a beauty never before imagined. I want to present the beautiful paintings of our ancestors — which until now could only be viewed from a single angle — as three-dimensional 3D works that can be seen from front, back, left, and right alike.
