Kong Ki Pyung Solo Exhibition: I Like Pizza - Utopia

The work of Kong Kipyung has shifted, since his recent FunnyFunny series, from darkness and weight toward brightness and lightness. Earlier, he focused on the brutality of an absurd modern society, expressing the historical and ideological scars carried by individuals and society alike. Now he works in vivid color, an Egyptian-relief-like carving style, and narrative, cartoon-like forms.

The Pizza series stands out in particular — rendering a range of images on pizza, one of the symbolic foods of modern capitalism, and prompting us to reflect on our present selves.

This exhibition is titled "Utopia," speaking to an inevitability: that we, having eaten pizza and been tamed by capitalism, can only dream of utopia right here, right now — and have no other choice but to dream it this way.

Through this exhibition, viewers will encounter the artist's imagination of "utopia," that most modern of dreams. (Text by Myungae Lee)
