Changbae Hwang

Changbae Hwang (1947–2001) was the first Korean-painting artist to receive the President's Award at the National Art Exhibition of Korea (1978). Beginning in Korean traditional painting, he boldly adopted Western materials and omitted preliminary sketches, producing work that looked Western in Korea and Korean abroad — earning him the nicknames "the maverick of Korean painting" and "the terrorist of Korean painting" as he dissolved boundaries between East and West. He taught at Kyung Hee, Duksung Women's, and Ewha Womans University, and won the National Art Exhibition President's Award (1978), Ministry of Culture and Information Minister's Award (1977), and the Sun Art Award (1987).
